What Online Music Metadata Teaches Us About Content

Content Pro Tech's Jerry Bartlett was guest at Scott Abel's Coffee And Content webinar discussing content metadata, and specifically, what metadata used in streaming services such as Spotify can teach us about using and managing metadata in our technical documentation work.

Scott Abel, otherwise known as The Content Wrangler holds a monthly online discussion about various subjects to do with technical content: Coffee and Content. Scott is well known as a music enthusiast and DJ within the technical communication community. Jerry is also similarly enthusiastic, so when the idea came up, Jerry Bartlett was invited to the session on 30 April, to discuss the topic.

This is what Scott said to introduce the session:

“During this episode of Coffee and Content, discover the hidden layers of digital music and how metadata shapes your listening experience. Jerry Bartlett, Content Operations Consultant at Content Pro Tech, will reveal why even simple questions (like when the Beatles' first LP was released or where to file Daft Punk) can lead to confusion without expert guidance.

Explore real-world examples that expose the pitfalls of inconsistent or incomplete metadata, from Shazam's struggles with classical tracks to AI tools like NotebookLM missing entire albums. You'll see firsthand how “truth collapse” sneaks into streaming platforms through the back door, creating frustration for both listeners and content managers.

Join us to understand why human expertise remains essential in building and maintaining robust content systems. Learn practical strategies you can use to ensure your own music collections (and those you manage) remain accurate, accessible, and enjoyable.”
